Chelsea Physic Garden (CPG), England’s second-oldest botanic garden and a Grade I listed site of significant historical value, delivered its Glasshouse Restoration Project as part of a broader master plan, “Sowing the Seeds of Discovery.” This restoration project conserved CPG’s historic glasshouses and delivered an exciting Activity Plan to engage previously under-served audiences.
In 2020, Alix Slater Consultancy supported CPG in developing this Activity Plan. This work included conducting a market analysis, identifying potential partners, thinking about relevant themes which schools might engage with and how to involve the local community. We also advised on how to write up the Action Plan.
By 2024, Alix Slater Consultancy’s role evolved to include in-depth research and data analysis to inform CPG’s Audience Development and Master Plans. We organised and analysed seven datasets to gain insights into visitor demographics and behaviours. We utilised ARC GIS to visualise geographic data, identifying visitor origins and catchment areas, thus offering CPG a clear picture of its audience reach. Additionally, we developed a standardised set of survey questions to ensure consistent data collection across all Chelsea Physic Garden feedback forms.
This structured approach to audience insights supports CPG’s long-term goals for conservation, education, and visitor engagement. Alix Slater Consultancy’s contributions form a crucial part of CPG’s strategic planning for sustainable growth and community involvement.
