Opening up the National Heritage of the Royal Hospital Chelsea

Client: Royal Hospital Chelsea
Dates: 2022 (Activity Planning)
Budget: £3,314,815
Project: “Opening up the National Heritage of the Royal Hospital Chelsea”
This project set out to share the unique heritage of the Royal Hospital Chelsea and the lives of the Chelsea Pensioners with the public following the Covid-19 pandemic. Funded by a £3.2 million grant, the 3 year project has opened up previously inaccessible parts of this historic site allowing visitors to explore Sir John Soane’s Grade II* listed Stable Block and engage directly with the stories of this national institution.
Alix worked with the Royal Hospital team to develop an activity plan focused on engaging veterans, people living with dementia, their carers’, and young people. This involved extensive consultation with local residents, charities supporting veterans and dementia communities, and Chelsea Pensioners themselves, shaping a program that is both inclusive and reflective of the Hospital’s values. This includes intergenerational storytelling sessions, a health and wellbeing program for those with dementia, and heritage skills training through internships and volunteer roles. The activity plan also included hard hat tours, family events, and specialist talks led by Chelsea Pensioners, providing opportunities for public engagement.
The new Visitor Centre in the former stables is open daily and features an outreach space for learning and wellbeing, a permanent exhibition, and new public facilities such as a shop, café, and community post office. This project not only preserves the legacy of the Chelsea Pensioners but also creates a welcoming, accessible space for communities to connect with the heritage of the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
